Chick-fil-a is a companion of gluttony and a disgrace to God (you to Dan Cathy)

A bit late to the game, I can’t help but write a little note about the Chick-fil-a debacle and Christianity.  I want to begin by saying that I have never understood how so many conservative Christians think they can pick and choose what to follow in the Bible and what to ignore.  This is a comment that many people have discussed, but it is very true.  Many Christians live by the Bible when it’s convenient to their prejudices and judgmental thoughts and ignore things the bible dictates that are inconvenient to them.

This is why I find Dan Cathy’s comments so ironic.  If you live under a rock let me give you a brief recap of the recent debacle.  Dan Cathy, CEO of Chick-fil-a, recently said:

“We are very much supportive of the family — the biblical definition of the family unit,”

and

“I think we are inviting God’s judgment on our nation when we shake our fist at him and say we know better than you as to what constitutes a marriage.”

He, like many fools, is choosing to interpret the Bible in a way that conveniently supports his prejudice and homophobic views toward the LGBT community.  He wants to live by the Bible as to not “shake his fist” at God.

Ummmmmm Dan, let’s talk for a minute.

You are the head of a fast food chain that specializes in fried chicken sandwiches.  If I remember correctly, and I do realize it’s been a while since I’ve bothered to crack open a Bible, the Bible suggests that God isn’t a fan of gluttony.  For instance, in Proverbs 23:20 – 21 warns the reader by saying:

Do not join those who drink too much wine or gorge themselves on meat, for drunkards and gluttons become poor, and drowsiness clothes them in rags.

And Proverbs 28:7 goes on to say:

He who keeps the law is a discerning son, but a companion of gluttons disgraces his father.

Dan, if you are so concerned with the need to not shake your fist in Gods face then you need to make some rules for your restaurants to make sure you aren’t shaking your fist in Gods face every time you allow your restaurant doors to open. You state clearly that no one should think they know better than God so you really shouldn’t associate or be a companion of gluttons.  Here are a few suggestions to help you out:

  1. Make sure that the serving sizes of the meals your restaurants serves don’t exceed about 600 calories.  We don’t want you supporting a greedy eater thereby supporting gluttons.
  2. You really shouldn’t allow anyone who is overweight (particularly individuals who are obese) into your restaurants at all.
  3. You should make sure your colleagues, all those employed by you, are healthy eaters.  Otherwise you are a companion of gluttons and a disgrace to God.
  4. Just shut your doors.

My guess is simply that a majority of your patrons, companions and colleagues succumb to the sin of gluttony (we’ve all seen the pictures of your supporters lining up outside and inside your restaurants and many are pretty wide… All signs point to these people being sinners).

If you are going to live by everything in the Bible, assuming you view the Bible as the word of God, then your restaurant will go out of business.  And if you want to live your life with the view that you don’t know better than God and should do as he teaches then you should really follow my suggestions above.  I just don’t want you to be a hypocrite.  A good businessman knows that being a hypocrite is not a good way of operating.  I have your best interest in mind here Dan.

Better yet, forget all that.  Why don’t you just step back and realize you are ignorant.  You are a homophobic fool opposed to equality.  In a few years you will feel like a fool looking back as you rallied against LGBT equality like so many bigots look back at how they sat on the wrong side of the Civil Rights Movement.  It’s the same story a different day.
